The Right Response #7

Can anyone not already on the scene
respond Instantaneously?

The only thing that stops a murderous spree shooter is a bullet. The sooner he gets that bullet, the fewer innocent children and loved ones he's able to slaughter. Although gun control fanatics have slammed this as "catchy," that does nothing to invalidate its obvious truth!

1. How long does Emergency Response Take?

A 357 gun Response Time is Faster than Calling 911
The police have a difficult job to do, often in very challenging circumstances, the average response time for a 911 call is 23 minutes. David Thweatt, Superintendent of the Harrold school district in Texas which has armed teachers, says that a police officer once told him something startling.

"Ninety-five percent of the time, we get to the scene late."

Some years ago, police found a methamphetamine lab in a house close to the Harrold school. A deputy had looked inside, seen something and called for backup. Thweatt reports that they made it to the house in 15 minutes, while they had figured it would take 18 to 20 minutes in a typical situation.

The Harrold school is in the middle of a prairie, miles from the nearest police station. If that had been an armed intruder at his school, the response time would have been too slow. So the school themselves have to be the first responders, suitable teachers are trained and armed. If attackers had targeted the school, says Thweat,

"We don't have 5 minutes. We don't have 10 minutes.
We would have had 20 minutes of hell"

2. Instant Response is Impossible

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke
The police recognize reality. As Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke observes:

"You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back ... While we wish we could be teleported to your home it ain’t going to happen. It will take minutes to get to your home and an attack will be over within seconds."

Each and every response, whether armed or not, takes time - and some responses are lots slower than others. Despite what liberals and gun-control advocates pretend, it is clearly impossible for any organization to respond instantaneously to any problem.

3. Don't Ignore Reality

Those who ignore the facts underlying response by armed police, as do many gun control fanatics, simply ignore reality whenever it conflicts with their opinions. How long does police response actually take?
  1. It takes you time to get access to a phone. This is only possible if, as one of the potential victims in a shooting spree, you're not stopped from getting and using a phone by the murderer. Unless you have a cell-phone, finding a phone can cause a substantial delay.

  2. It takes time for you to make an emergency call.

  3. it takes time for the emergency call to be answered and for you to tell the emergency service operator exactly what's happening.

  4. it takes time for the emergency service to initiate the actual response. Police may be busy with other crimes, so are not necessarily instantly available.

  5. it takes time for responders to travel to your location - police stations are not necessarily located right next to the scene of the crime.
With the best will in the world, this all means that if police are there within a handful of minutes, they've done a truly outstanding job. Yet as emergency services all recognize:

4. Give the Police Less Responsibilities

Sometimes less is more. What would happen if politicians stopped overloading the police with yet more and more laws, and ceased trying to micro-manage people's lives. If there were no laws against victimless crime, for example, then the police would have more manpower to respond faster to emergencies.

But, contrary to popular belief, the police have absolutely no duty to respond to emergency calls. As D.C.'s highest court found in
Warren v. District of Columbia, 444 A.2d 1 (D.C. Ct. of Ap., 1981), it is:

a "fundamental principle of American law that a government and its agents
are under no general duty to provide public services, such as police protection, to any individual citizen."

Since the police have no such duty, you are responsible for protecting your family, no matter how much gun-control fanatics disagree. Any and all legislation that restricts the rights of responsible citizens to own defensive firearms inevitably restricts your ability to protect yourself and your loved ones.

5. Are They Experts?

Many advocates for stringent gun bans fondly imagine they are experts in either personal protection or firearms. Nothing would make their opinion worth listening to if they are not. Yet since real expertise takes extensive hands-on experience, such pretensions are either pure arrogance or simply mindless propaganda.
A great example is the fatuous uttering of previous US President Bill Clinton speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative America Conference on June 14, 2016:

“More people would have been killed if someone [at the Orlando Nightclub where 49 were massacred] had a permitted concealed handgun.”

But who's a real expert? President Obama, who says he shoots skeet guns "all the time?" Gun control advocates like Piers Morgan, who'd never fired a gun until recently? Or Larry Correia, Utah Concealed Weapons instructor, military and law enforcement master trainer Open Page in a new Tab, who's also a Title 7 SOT gun store owner, competition shooter, and expert witness for the Utah State Legislature Open Page in a new Tab:

"Police are awesome ... [but] cops can't be everywhere. There are only a couple hundred thousand on duty at any given time patrolling the entire country. Excellent response time is in the three-five minute range.

"We've seen what bad guys can do in three minutes, but sometimes it is far worse … in some cases that means the bad guys can have ten, fifteen, even twenty minutes to do horrible things.

"The average number of people shot in a mass shooting event when the shooter is stopped by law enforcement: 14. The average number of people shot in a mass shooting event when the shooter is stopped by civilians: 2.5. The reason is simple. The armed civilians are there when it started."

Yet politicians still pretend their desire to disarm responsible citizens is for their own protection! Maybe it is - to protect the politicians themselves from their deceived and angry citizens!

"The remedy for speech that is false is speech that is true. This is the ordinary course in a free society. The response to the unreasoned is the rational; to the uninformed, the enlightened;
to the straight-out lie, the simple truth."

- Anthony Kennedy, United States Supreme Court Justice

The violent crime reductions benefit everyone when law-abiding, responsible citizens are encouraged to be able to defend their families and themselves from violent criminals, rapists, refugees, and terrorists. When women and seniors are armed, they can defend themselves from attacks by usually young, male and stronger violent criminals. Yet there's no sanction or penalty if you choose not to be armed. Despite misrepresentation and media misunderstanding, Universal Gun Ownership is neither Mandatory Gun Ownership nor Compulsory Gun Ownership, it's simply your choice.
