Do Safe Storage laws Avoid Accidents

Or do they kill Children?

Evidence-based gun policies protect your citizens - including children - from violent crime and rape, just as evidence-based food policies have solved hunger and malnutrition in much of the world Open Page in a new Tab or Window.

1. Do Safe Storage gun laws work?

Handgun with Safe Storage lock
The problem with safe storage is that if anyone - such as a child - needs to defend him/herself and the family gun is locked away - "safely stored" - then they can't use it when they really need its protection...
Fortunately, these are not isolated examples, there are many more such incidents:

2. Safe Storage gun laws can and do kill children

And even more disastrously, Safe Storage laws have actually killed children instead of protecting them:
Police Car with Flashing Lights and Siren arrives to protect family
  • Similar gun laws also killed both of Dr. Susanna Gratia Hupp's parents Open Page in a new Tab or Window. At that time, the law said her gun must be safely stored, she was not allowed to carry it into Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas. Twenty people were slaughtered and many more injured in this mass shooting.
  • Guns Don't Kill People, Gun Control Kills People Open Page in a new Tab or Window explains how Uganda terrorizes its own citizens under the auspices of the UN gun control mandate. How? "The disarmament process is a tactic to facilitate robbing the Karamojong of their resources.” The Daily Monitor newspaper, for example, reports that:

’The [Ugandan] government has announced plans to confiscate "about 1,903 sq km out of the total area of 2,304 sq km of the Pian Upe game reserve" for private investment purposes.'
Although often filled with good intentions, Safe Storage laws have unintended - and deadly - consequences Open Page in a new Tab. In the year after fifteen states passed this law, their increase in violent crime totaled 300 more murders, 3,860 more rapes, 24,650 more robberies, and 25,000 more aggravated assaults.

3. Does a One-Size-Fits-All answer ever Fit ALL Circumstances?

The absence of safe storage laws has saved children's lives in many cases while California's safe storage laws were directly responsible for the murder of two young children. Although generally ignored by mainstream media, there are many such cases Open Page in a new Tab or Window.

So do "safe storage" laws save children's lives or are they responsible for children being murdered? Should you lock your guns away or not? - a question that needs to be answered for each individual child. Since it depends on each one's maturity, how can a one-size-fits-all answer ever be right for everybody?

Parents know their own children, they know how well their child has been trained to handle guns safely, and they know how responsible each one is at their current stage of development. Children as young as four have been taught to use a gun responsibly Open Page in a new Tab or Window.

Of course, the answer for each child today is very different to a year later when they'll be more mature. Parents therefore need to decide how best to approach gun storage for each child at any point in time.

4. But don’t children have accidents with guns?

One politician was very concerned about children having an accident with a gun not stored safely:
He wanted adults to be held responsible for accidents when children got hold of guns that were not “stored safely”. He knew that owning a firearm carries the responsibility to ensure its safe use. How do you stop children having accidents with guns that are not stored out of their reach?
His friends' child was killed when the young boy found the key to the gun safe, got the gun out and played with it. But this suggests the parents hadn't taught the boy how to handle a gun safely. Just like swimming pools, guns also kill careless children when not properly trained to use them with absolute safety.

His concern is natural, but safe storage laws have been directly responsible for murdering children Open Page in a new Tab or Window and many others Open Page in a new Tab or Window. Unseen consequences come with every law, eliminating every conceivable risk is impossible. Any law that's prescriptive - mandates a particular solution - also has unseen consequences. Being unseen, they're ignored - Bastiat's broken window fallacy Open Page in a new Tab or Window - yet do far more harm than good.

What's actually needed is more sensible solutions for guns and children Open Page in a new Tab or Window.

5. Swimming pool accidents and dog attacks are far more frequent

Avoiding fatal accidents for your children involves carefully assessing the risks of what you let them do. Few if any causes of childhood death have fallen as steeply as gun accidents. all Open Page in a new Tab

What's riskier for your child: a gun, a swimming pool or a dog? In the USA, a child is TEN TIMES more likely to drown in a swimming pool accident than be shot in a gun accident. A gun accident involving a child is a lot less likely than a child drowning in a swimming pool accident. [link now bad: smartparentshealthykids.com/blog/?p=11]

But to avoid more common accidents and deaths then you should BAN DOGS whenever you have a child in the house. There are approximately 4.7 million dog bite victims annually in the USA and 1,000 Americans are treated in emergency rooms as a result of dog bites EVERY DAY. Most of these victims are children bitten in the face and some die, for example newborn baby killed by family dogs.

So you should be ten times more worried about letting your child go over to little Timmy's house where he could drown in their pool or be bitten by their dog. It's just common sense to be way less concerned about letting your child go over to little Billy's house where father has a gun...

6. Owning a Firearm Carries Responsibilities

Since knowing how to use a gun can protect a child from rape or murder, many parents teach their children how to safely use one to defend themselves if attacked. But because parents know their child's capabilities, this is clearly a parental decision.

If you're more worried about protecting your little girl from a home invader, you'll ensure she's responsible and knows how to use your gun safely. If you're more worried about gun accidents than empowering her to defend herself in today's violent world, then the answer is simple: don't have a gun in the house.

No matter which way you answer, you'll live with the consequences. So you need to ignore all the misleading spin and explore the facts carefully: Which actually happens more frequently?
  • a child having an accident with a gun, or
  • a child needing to defend him/herself against a home invader or violent attack
Responsible parents will explore the facts and weigh up their children's maturity before arriving at their decision. No matter how attractive it seems, how can a one-size-fits-all political decision by well-meaning legislators be the answer?

7. Compare the Risks and Benefits for Your City...

Scales of Justice to Compare Risk and Benefits
With more responsible citizens encouraged to own a gun, you'll stop a lot of violent crime. Yet although gun accidents involving children are so rare, what are the risks that a child will be injured in a gun accident? The immense publicity given to all such incidents shows how uncommon they are.

How many will be saved when more citizens have guns for defense? The FBI stats show that even more guns bring even less crime Open Page in a new Tab or Window. Crunching the numbers showed one city that encouraging gun ownership could stop up to three murders, seven women being raped, over a hundred robberies, and sixty-two aggravated assaults every year.

Shouldn't you investigate the pros and cons of encouraging people to be able to protect their families Open Page in a new Tab or Window, and also to investigate the opposite - the pros and cons of not doing so. Then you'll have the facts to make an informed decision for your citizens: which one reduces crime as well as saving more lives...

8. Washington DC's Safe Storage law

Washington DC had safe storage and trigger lock gun laws for thirty plus years. But the DC murder rate soared while their very restrictive safe storage law was in force, yet when it was overturned by the Supreme Court, the crime rate came right back down.

According to JustFacts.com Open Page in a new Tab or Window, the D.C. murder rate averaged 73% higher than at the outset of their safe storage law, while the U.S. murder rate averaged 11% lower. These results prove the local council had relied on falsified evidence to pass the act. In fact, their safe storage act killed numerous responsible citizens, although it had been passed by pretending to:

"reduce the potentiality for gun-related crimes and gun-related deaths from occurring within the District of Columbia.”

Once Washington DC passed their gun control laws, their murder rate became one of the highest in the country at 59.6 per 100,000 people. Yet across the river in Arlington, Virginia, gun ownership was less restricted and the murder rate just 1.6 per 100,000 - less than three percent of the DC rate Open Page in a new Tab.

9. Summary - the Benefits Far Outweigh the Risks

Hundreds of thousands of people are saved from violent crime each year by defensive gun uses (DGUs) Open Page in a new Tab or Window, some reports estimate more than two million Americans stop violent crime by being armed each year.

It happens so often that such incidents are just not news-worthy. Yet a small number do get reported, Open Page in a new Tab or Window these pages each contain hundreds of reports of people being saved by DGUs Open Page in a new Tab or Window.

The UCR numbers from the FBI prove that armed citizens discourage criminals from attack Open Page in a new Tab or Window. The more people owning firearms, the safer your city becomes. So encourage gun ownership so all your people can protect their families and enjoy the dramatic drop in crime.

Thousands of innocent citizens are assaulted every day in the USA. Fifty-seven in Georgia, forty-nine in South Carolina, and a hundred and seventy-nine in Texas (latest numbers from the FBI Open Page in a new Tab or Window). In just these three states, two hundred and eighty women and girls are raped each and every week. So start reducing violent crime today, then the next violent crime victim will not be one of YOUR citizens...

Without massive increases in spending and taxes, is there any other proven way for you to readily achieve such dramatic reductions in violent crime?

Food for Thought

170 million new guns, 51% decrease in violent crime since 1991
Detroit Police Chief James Craig

"The number of CPL [concealed pistol license] holders running around the city of Detroit act as a deterrent.

"Good Americans with CPLs translates into crime reduction. I learned that real quick in the state of Maine ... Maine is one of the safest places in America. Clearly, suspects knew that good Americans were armed."

Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke
“With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option. You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back; but are you prepared?

"Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there. You have a duty to protect yourself and your family.”

Average deaths in a shooting rampage when stopped by police: 14.3. But average deaths when stopped by civilians: far less - just 2.3.

When women and seniors are armed, they can defend themselves from attack by often young, male and much stronger violent criminals, rapists, and terrorists.

So we encourage responsible law-abiding citizens, those who pass the background checks, to be able to protect themselves, their family and their property. Despite negativity and media misunderstanding, Discouraging Criminals is neither Mandatory Gun Ownership nor Compulsory Gun Ownership, it's simply your choice.
